Tell Me That Story Again – FREE TRIAL CLASS

The Indigenous Tradition of Oral Storytelling
Grade 5-8

Class Description:

Artist Educators Lindy Kinoshameg, from Wikwemikoong Unceded First Nation, and Leslie McCue, from Curve Lake First Nation, will facilitate a new storytelling class that encompasses respect, leadership and teamwork. Indigenous storytelling is deeply rooted in our connection with Mother Earth, the water, the plants and animals. Students will be invited to explore that connection through the telling of their own stories. In the Fall and Winter terms, students will be introduced to the Indigenous tradition of oral storytelling, including its history, and learn how art, movement and dance help weave the tales told. Students will develop confidence, active listening skills, and their imagination. The Spring term will culminate in a storytelling performance created and performed by the students.

Students will delve into:
– Oral Storytelling histories and techniques
– Awareness of Indigenous culture, including an introduction to Indigenous dance
– Investigating ways to make stories personal and powerful

These storytelling and drama skills will be developed through:
– Respect, Leadership, and Teamwork
– Sharing the space equally amongst participants
– Confidence building
– Creating an atmosphere of support and accountability
