The Other Side of the Closet
In this series of interviews, Maja Ardal (former Artistic Director of YPT), Camilla Holland (former YPT Education Coordinator) and playwright Ed Roy discuss the importance of premiering the groundbreaking play The Other Side of the Closet at YPT in 1997. Produced in association with Montreal’s Youtheatre, the play addresses issues of homophobia and intolerance among youth from the perspective of a gay teenager, and challenges the audiences’ notion of what it means to “fit in”. YPT received a wide range of reactions to the show’s premise from critics, teachers, parents and students in the days leading up to its premiere and throughout its run. Some felt the subject matter shouldn’t be shown to a teen audience while others praised the company for providing a platform to discuss these important issues. The play was remounted in both 1998 and 2005, upholding YPT’s tradition of never shying away from difficult – and sometimes controversial – subject matter.
