SUMMARY:In the Moment
DESCRIPTION:In the Moment: An Intergenerational Training Opportunity for Emerging & Experienced Actors\nYoung People’s Theatre is thrilled to announce In the Moment\, a free-of-charge\, intergenerational training opportunity for both emerging and experienced artists from across Canada. The second training intensive offered by YPT\, this project consists of a nine-day summer program (August 26-September 4\, 2017) co-taught by Jan Henderson\, one of Canada’s leading clown and mask teachers\, and actor\, director\, and educator\, Aaron Willis. \nThe training will focus on the imperative presence of theatre. Applying tenets of spontaneous\, improvisational theatre and clown\, the work of ‘being live’ or ‘in the moment’ on stage will be explored through Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. \nThrough In the Moment\, we aim to meet the needs of both artists in training and those who have been working in theatre for many years\, but who share an interest in ongoing learning. Intergenerational programming has proven benefits and\, for the purposes of this training\, affords its participants the opportunity to learn from one another’s unique strengths and experiences in both training and professional work. \nSpace is limited. We will accept an equal number of training and professional artists. \nApplicants must either be: \n\nIn professional actor training at one of Canada’s theatre schools;\nParticipating in an actor training program offered through an arts organization;\nOR working as a professional actor and have an interest in ongoing training.\n\nApplicants must be available for all training dates.\n(Sessions will run from 9:30AM-5:30PM each day.) \nApplicants should submit: \n\nA video of themselves performing two monologues. One must be from an absurdist play. The other is the actor’s choice. The video must not exceed four minutes. The video can be a DVD submission or a YouTube link.\nA brief letter (no more than 500 words) expressing their particular interest in this training opportunity.\nTwo reference letters from current instructors (if in training) or directors (if working).\n\nThis training program is free thanks to generous support from the Slaight Family Foundation. Some funding may also be available to offset some travel/accommodation costs. Applicants should indicate how they might benefit from financial assistance for travel/accommodation if required. \nApplication Deadline: May 19\, 2017 (mailed applications should be postmarked with this date). \nApplications may be emailed to ladamson@youngpeoplestheatre.org with the subject line “In the Moment” or mailed to the attention of: \nLois Adamson\, Interim Artistic Associate\, Education\nYoung People’s Theatre\n165 Front St. East Toronto\, ON M5A 3Z4 \nSuccessful candidates will be notified by June 23\, 2017.

The remainder of the conference will be made up of a series of papers\, roundtables and/or practical workshops proposed by conference presenters. \nInvitation to Submit a Proposal\nEmerging scholars\, youth workers\, artists and community organizers involved in practice or scholarship on theatre for/by/with youth are invited to submit a proposal.\nPlease respond to the following questions in your proposal: \n\nWhat is the role of drama for youth in an increasingly precarious world?\nHow can youth engage in resistance through drama? How might this impact justice in their\ncommunities?\nHow are the principles and theories of drama education and applied theatre used to examine\ninjustice\, foster resistance and imagine new possibilities?\n\nProposal Details\nProposals must not exceed 500 words. When submitting\, please also include the following information: \n\nName of Presenter(s):\nPreferred Format (paper/roundtable/workshop):\nContact person:\nAffiliation(s):\nMailing address:\nEmail:\nTelephone:\n\nPlease submit your proposal via e-mail to: Rachel Rhoades (Rachel.Rhoades@mail.utoronto.ca) and Lois Adamson (ladamson@youngpeoplestheatre.org) by Monday\, April 17\, 2017.\nSuccessful applicants will be notified by Monday\, April 24\, 2017. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact either:\nRachel Rhoades\nAda Slaight Scholar-in Residence\, YPT\nOntario Institute of Studies in Education\, PhD Candidate\, University of Toronto\nrachel.rhoades@mail.utoronto.ca\nor\nLois Adamson\nInterim Artistic Associate\, Education\nYoung People’s Theatre\nladamson@youngpeopletheatre.ca

SUMMARY:Everyone's a Critic
DESCRIPTION:James and the Giant Peach Post-Show Q&A \nFriday\, March 3\, 2017\n10:15AM Performance \nRecognizing that the most common assignment given to students in connection with their visit to YPT is a play review\, we developed\, in collaboration with Jon Kaplan of NOW Magazine\, a post-show Q&A specifically about the art of writing reviews. Jon Kaplan also provides a short paragraph in each of our study guides entitled “Tips for Student Reviewers”. In 2015/16\, we built on the success of these sessions and engaged a student reviewer\, Sayak Sneddon-Ghosal\, to facilitate these sessions.
