SUMMARY:PD Session for York Region Secondary School Teachers
DESCRIPTION:With Young People’s Theatre’s production of The Wizard of Oz as the provocation\, participants will be guided through the process of creating their own action research project. Action research is a method of inquiry that provides students with the opportunity and skills to study issues affecting their lives and to plan and implement a course of action to address them. Participants in this full-day session will work in collaboration with professional artists and members of staff to design a research plan. This will include finding a research question\, collecting data and evidence\, answering their chosen question\, presenting their research and evaluating their project.

SUMMARY:SHSM Arts & Culture Industry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day with industry professionals at Young People’s Theatre! \nThe day will start with YPT’s production of The Wizard of Oz\, followed by a Tools of the Trade post-show Q&A session that deals specifically with the technical elements of the show. Students will then participate in a behind-the-scenes tour. Led by YPT staff members\, this tour will look at what it takes to mount a production and will include a history of the building and the company itself. It will include visits to our Props\, Wardrobe and Scene shops\, the lighting and soundbooth\, and backstage. This training day will culminate in certification workshops. \n \nSpace is limited. DESCRIPTION:Cultural Gym: Secrets of Scenic Painting\nDuring Cultural Gym: Secrets of Scenic Painting\, YPT Resident Scenic Painter Mattea Kennedy will lead a series of classes on traditional techniques frequently used in scenic painting. Participants will learn the step-by-step process of how to beautifully transform any object into wood\, marble or stone\, using only paint and the secrets of scenic art! \nDates:\nWed\, Apr 20th – 6:00pm to 7:00pm\nWed\, Apr 27th – 6:00pm to 7:00pm\nWed\, May 4th – 6:00pm to 7:00pm\nWed\, May 11th – 6:00pm to 7:00pm \nParticipants:\nWe welcome children and adults to attend the program. This program is recommended for ages 12 and up. \nRegistration:\nThe cost of each class is $5. Space is limited. Pre-registration is recommended. DESCRIPTION:PA Day: Play in a Day\nYPT is running full-day workshops on PA Days in the TDSB/TCDSB. This full-day workshop on April 15 is for children in Grades 1-3. It will run from 9:00am to 3:30pm. Early drop-off is available from 8:30am. These PA Day – Play in a Day sessions are being offered at the specially-discounted price of $40 per participant. \nFun drama exercises led by great artist educators\, culminating in a collaboratively-created “play in a day”! By observing a wide range of people\, workplaces and activities\, students will think about who does what and how all of the pieces and departments work together. \nComponents:\n\nTours of YPT\, including backstage and all of the production shops.\nRehearsal observation of The Wizard of Oz.\n\nThis Discovery Day will take place at YPT. Students will be broken into smaller groups for the tours/rehearsal observations to maximize engagement. \nMember Schools\nYPT’s Member Schools program aims to create a deeper relationship between participating schools and the theatre. YPT works with school leadership to create a three-year partnership agreement specifically tailored to the aims and needs of that particular school. Each partnership is different but all include increased attendance at the theatre\, enrichment for students and teachers\, as well as research with and by the participating school’s students and staff. We provide Member Schools with a special rate for tickets and enrichment programming\, thus allowing them to take full advantage of the many opportunities we offer.

DESCRIPTION:Parent Seminar\n“Breathe in and Shine: Mindfulness-based Practices that Support Children and Families to Thrive”\nSara Marlowe MSW\, RSW \nYoung People’s Theatre is pleased to partner with The Hincks-Dellcrest Centre – Gail Appel Institute to present a Parent Seminar on April 11. This session is the latest in a series of parent seminars held at YPT that offer practical skills to promote children’s well-being and improve the lives of families. \nThis seminar will engage participants in a variety of age-appropriate ways to share mindfulness practice with children and parents\, infused with principles such as acceptance\, letting go\, patience\, non-judgement\, non-striving and compassion. It will explore the intersection of mindfulness and neuroscience and offer accessible\, creative and playful ways to share this exciting information with children and families. \nThe Hincks-Dellcrest – Gail Appel Institute offers advanced education to those who work with children and families in a variety of mental health care professions and provides resources to parents and caregivers to support them with their children’s mental health care needs.
