Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)
Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) is a Ministry of Education program for high school students to focus on a career path that matches their skills and interests while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Read more about SHSM here.
YPT is now offering SHSM programs entirely online. Students will participate in a combination of engaging live and pre-recorded sessions, culminating in a practical project.
The following two SHSM programs are readily available to book:
Leadership in The Arts
YPT is currently in the middle of a major expansion project – Room for Imagination – to renovate our current theatre and add a new space across the street. In this program we want to engage your students in this real situation that YPT is in, and have them learn some of the skills involved in leading and fundraising a major project like this. Students will have the chance to speak with our leadership about plans for the renovations, including the organization’s needs and the budget required. We will then have someone from our Development department speak to the group about their job and the different ways of fundraising money. Finally, students will create their own fundraising plan and proposals, either for YPT’s Room for Imagination campaign or for their own dream artistic projects.
“Learning is at the Centre of Everything We Do”, and in this workshop we will introduce your students to the work of the YPT Education & Participation department and how it plays a major role in YPT’S mission to create a positive and lasting impact on the emotional, social, and intellectual development of young people. Students will meet with members of YPT’s Education & Participation department to discuss our different educational programs for young people, including YPT’s Drama School, school and community programs. Students will also meet with a professional YPT artist educator and learn about their role in facilitating across these different educational programs, and also learn about the fundamentals of lesson planning in order to grow their own arts education practice. Finally, students will create their own lesson plans for a drama workshop or another arts discipline of their choice.
Both SHSM programs are 3 hours in length and available at a flat rate of $500 plus HST for a group of up to 30 participants.
Are you interested in something different? In the past, students have participated in ICE trainings and taken SHSM certification workshops in Artistic Programming, Sales & Marketing, Administration & Finance, Set Design, Scenic Carpentry and Scenic Paintings.
