DESCRIPTION:These performances are specifically designed for young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Relaxed performances may include adjusted sound and lighting levels\, a designated relief area outside of the Mainstage theatre\, and additional support before and during your visit. When we held our first relaxed performance in the 2014/15 season\, we learned a great deal about how small changes and additions to the resources and environment provided can have a big impact. YPT’s relaxed performances are geared toward young people with ASD\, but are also suitable for all young audiences and can be an especially good introductory experience for first-time theatregoers. \n\n“I would like to thank YPT for taking on this initiative. At the relaxed performance I attended\, it was very exciting to see the kids and staff engage in such a safe and supportive environment. The thought and time put into the accommodations for those in the audience with ASD was very impressive. Parents and teachers bringing children with ASD to these performances should feel very confident that their experience will be very positive. DESCRIPTION:Member School Workshop\nYPT’s Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang Member School Workshop is focused on exploring the following themes: child power and challenging injustice. YPT Resident Artist Educators work with students at the school to explore these themes through a series of dramatic exercises. With specific curriculum expectations in place\, these active workshops are designed to enhance students’ understanding and experience of Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang. \nMember Schools program\nYPT’s Member Schools program aims to create a deeper relationship between participating schools and the theatre. YPT works with school leadership to create a three-year partnership agreement\, which is specifically tailored to the aims and needs of that particular school. Each partnership is different\, but all include increased attendance at the theatre\, enrichment for students and teachers\, as well as research with and by the participating school’s students and staff. We provide Member Schools with a special rate for tickets and enrichment programming\, allowing them to take full advantage of the many opportunities we offer. \nResident Artist Educators\nThe Resident Artist Educator program at YPT furthers the theatre’s leadership in the field of arts education at a professional theatre company. The Resident Artist-Educator Program is planned for each participant to be involved in YPT’s productions as well as work as a teaching artist in residence. As both artists and educators\, each participant creates\, teaches and learns during their residency thereby embodying the company’s dual identity as a professional theatre and centre of arts education. DESCRIPTION:The Cultural Gym\, YPT’s newest community program\, is an opportunity for both children and adults to exercise their creative muscles! Cultural Gym sessions will introduce specific aspects of theatre and performance to help participants develop new drama-based skills. Four different sessions will be offered throughout our 2015/16 season\, each with a unique focus and led by professional artists. Come challenge yourself in new ways and be part of an artistic community! \nSession #2: Intro to Collective Creation with Rob Kempson\nFacilitated by one of YPT’s Resident Artist Educators\, Rob Kempson\, you will learn the basic techniques of collective creation (theatre created by a group around a given theme)\, including writing\, staging\, and performance. Each week\, the theme will change and so will the creation. \nParticipants:\nWe welcome children\, youth and adults to attend the program! Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a participating adult. \nAbout Rob Kempson:\nRob Kempson is a theatre artist and educator\, working as a playwright\, composer\, performer\, and director. Rob was most recently seen starring in his Dora-nominated musical The Way Back To Thursday (Theatre Passe Muraille). As an artist-educator\, Rob has worked for a number of major school boards as well as Young People’s Theatre\, Canadian Stage\, Theatre Passe Muraille\, Pleiades Theatre\, Opera Atelier and Casa Loma. He works regularly as a community arts facilitator and curator\, collectively creating performances and interactive exhibits with community members. He is currently the Associate Artistic Director at the Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque\, ON.\n\nRegistration:\nCultural Gym sessions are PWYC (Pay What You Can) with a recommended donation of $2 per session. \nSpace is limited. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, December 6th for a Jacob Two-Two Family Drama Workshop\, led by Resident Artist Educators Rob Kempson and Britta Johnson (Britta is also the Jacob Two-Two co-Composer and Lyricist). \nDuring this pre-show workshop\, participants will learn about the story and music of Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang and also work together to write songs of their very own! \nDetails:\nSpace is limited. Most recently\, she was co-composer/lyricist for Brantwood (Sheridan College/Outside the March; Dora Mavor Moore Audience Choice Award 2015)\, Music Director for Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play (Outside the March) and premiered the role of Margaret Cunningham in Living in the Space (Globe Theatre\, Regina). Britta has written 5 full-length musicals including Big Box Story (Stratford Festival gala performance)\, Alligator Tears (commissioned by the Blyth Festival)\, and Life After (Paprika Festival). She was recently named playwright in Residence with Acting Up Stage Company. She has spent a season at the Stratford Festival as a music assistant and has had her work showcased at the Shaw Festival’s Lyric Canada conference. SUMMARY:Three Up Application Deadline
DESCRIPTION:The Three Up Application Deadline is 5:00pm on December 4\, 2015. \nYoung People’s Theatre (YPT)\, Britain’s Action Transport Theatre (ATT) and the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) are thrilled to partner together on Three Up\, a new international program for young writers aged 13-17. YPT is looking for four young people from the GTA with a passion for writing and interest in building their skills to be part of this five-month international collaboration. The Three Up program provides the opportunity for youth to reach beyond their own borders to build community with peers from the UK and Australia while working with professional\, local\, and international playwrights and facilitators. \nWe are looking for participants for the Three Up program who:\n– Are between the ages of 13 -17.\n– Have experience and interest with creative writing (plays\, poems\, short stories\, etc.)\n– Have an interest in building international creative collaborations.\n– Are able to commit to attend all in-person sessions at YPT for the duration of the program (twice a month).\n– Are able to commit a minimum of four hours a week to independent writing and/or correspondence with international writing partners.\n– Have access to the internet\, a personal email address and permission to use a Facebook account to access our closed Facebook group. \nMeeting Dates:\nIn-person sessions will take place twice a month at YPT (165 Front Street E\, Toronto) with YPT facilitators and the four Canadian participants. These Wednesdays meetings (6pm to 8pm) will occur on the following dates: \nJanuary – Jan 6\, 2016 and Jan 27\, 2016\nFebruary – Feb 10\, 2016 and Feb 24\, 2016\nMarch – Mar 9\, 2016 and Mar 30\, 2016\nApril – April 13\, 2016 and April 27\, 2016\nMay/June – May 11\, 2016 and June 1\, 2016 \nHow to Apply:\nComplete and submit the Three Up Program Application Form along with one writing sample. \nAll applications will be reviewed and assessed by the Three Up program facilitators\, YPT’s School & Community Programs Manager and YPT’s Associate Artistic Director and Dramaturg. SUMMARY:Cultural Gym: Intro to Collective Creation
DESCRIPTION:The Cultural Gym\, YPT’s newest community program\, is an opportunity for both children and adults to exercise their creative muscles! Cultural Gym sessions will introduce specific aspects of theatre and performance to help participants develop new drama-based skills. Four different sessions will be offered throughout our 2015/16 season\, each with a unique focus and led by professional artists. Come challenge yourself in new ways and be part of an artistic community! \nSession #2: Intro to Collective Creation with Rob Kempson\nFacilitated by one of YPT’s Resident Artist Educators\, Rob Kempson\, you will learn the basic techniques of collective creation (theatre created by a group around a given theme)\, including writing\, staging\, and performance. Each week\, the theme will change and so will the creation. \nNov 25th – 6:00pm to 7:30pm – Theme: Peace\nDec 9th – 6:00pm to 7:30pm – Theme: Hope\nDec 16th – 6:00pm to 7:30pm – Theme: Celebration \nParticipants:\nWe welcome children\, youth and adults to attend the program! Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a participating adult. \nAbout Rob Kempson:\nRob Kempson is a theatre artist and educator\, working as a playwright\, composer\, performer\, and director. Rob was most recently seen starring in his Dora-nominated musical The Way Back To Thursday (Theatre Passe Muraille). As an artist-educator\, Rob has worked for a number of major school boards as well as Young People’s Theatre\, Canadian Stage\, Theatre Passe Muraille\, Pleiades Theatre\, Opera Atelier and Casa Loma. He works regularly as a community arts facilitator and curator\, collectively creating performances and interactive exhibits with community members. He is currently the Associate Artistic Director at the Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque\, ON.\n\nRegistration:\nCultural Gym sessions are PWYC (Pay What You Can) with a recommended donation of $2 per session. \nSpace is limited. DESCRIPTION:YPT’s Member Schools program aims to create a deeper relationship with the schools we serve. YPT works with school leadership to create a three-year partnership agreement that is tailored to the aims and needs of that particular school. Each partnership is different but all include increased attendance at the theatre\, enrichment for students and teachers as well as research with and by the participating school’s students and staff. We provide Member Schools with a special rate for tickets and enrichment programming which allow them to take full advantage of the many opportunities we offer. \nFor a nominal fee\, we offer Behind-the-Scenes Tours of our historic space. Visit our wardrobe\, prop and scenery shops. Explore both our theatres: the Susan Rubes Mainstage Theatre and the Nathan Cohen Studio Theatre. Get a sneak-peek at our greenroom and take in a bird’s eye-view from our lighting booth. Our Behind-the-Scenes Tours give patrons a unique experiential learning opportunity to discover what goes into the making of a production and the operation of a professional theatre. Patrons will have the chance to see all the backstage action and the opportunity speak directly with our staff about the life and history of our theatre.

DESCRIPTION:“Let’s Get it Together” presented by OSSTF District 13 and Durham District School Board \nIn this workshop\, teachers\, students and members of Young People’s Theatre (YPT) will discuss the collaborative partnership between YPT and Pine Ridge Secondary School and the ways in which programming through the Member Schools program at YPT has allowed both the school and theatre to benefit. In this session\, we will share a number of case studies which outline specific strategies employed to support both student and teacher learning\, leadership and development in the context of arts education. We will discuss the success of a co-created student theatre youth group. We will share particular examples that speak to the value of addressing difficult and pertinent subjects in partnership with the professional arts. We will demonstrate the ways in which this work has allowed for interdisciplinary collaboration between staff and students within the school. This workshop will include a backstage tour of the theatre\, an active learning session with one of YPT’s Resident Artist Educators and the opportunity to speak with industry professionals.
