DESCRIPTION:Summer Reading Series Workshop\nToronto Public Library – Barbara Frum Library – Summer Reading Series Workshop \nAugust 4\, 2016 \n2pm – 4pm \nTheme: Collective Creation \nFacilitated by Herbie Barnes. \nHerbie is an Anishnabe theatre artist from Aundeck Omni Kaning on Manitoulin Island. Some of Herbie’s stage roles include Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit (YPT\, MTYP\, Carousel Players)\, Norvel Morrisou in Copper Thunderbird (NAC)\, a Wickersham Brother in Seussical (MTYP)\, and Russell in Russell’s World (MTYP)\, which he also wrote. He also played Tweedle Dee in Alice Through the Looking Glass as part of his season in the National Arts Centre Acting Ensemble. Herbie has directed a variety of productions across North America including Oliver (Bluff City Theatre)\, Tales of an Urban Indian (Public Theatre\, Autry Theatre) and Someday (Native Earth). Herbie works in front of and behind the camera in film and television as an actor\, director and writer. As an artist-educator\, Herbie has facilitated programs for elementary to university aged students including a technique he developed called “Dropping the Mask”. \n\nYPT offers a wide range of community programs and workshops that serve to enrich neighbourhoods throughout the city. The focus of these programs is to introduce participants to the arts while developing positive social skills.

DESCRIPTION:Final Meeting of Three Up\nYoung People’s Theatre (YPT)\, Britain’s Action Transport Theatre (ATT) and the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) are thrilled to partner together on Three Up\, a new international program for young writers aged 13-17. Four young people from the GTA with a passion for writing and interest in building their skills have been selected to be part of this five-month international collaboration. The Three Up program provides the opportunity for youth to reach beyond their own borders to build community with peers from the UK and Australia while working with professional\, local\, and international playwrights and facilitators. \nIn-person meetings will occur twice a month with the YPT facilitators and the four Canadian participants in attendance. The purpose of these meetings is to provide instruction on playwriting\, to discuss the ongoing collaborative work with their international partners\, to monitor progress and to share completed works. The five-month training program will culminate with the writers collaboratively creating a script with a counterpart from each of the other participating countries.

DESCRIPTION:Young People’s Theatre is delighted to extend an invitation to the community to attend our 50th Birthday Bash on Friday\, May 13th! \nJoin the party as YPT throws open its doors to welcome members of the theatre and the education communities\, along with donors\, volunteers\, Drama School alumni\, audience members past and present\, and friends from the St. Lawrence neighbourhood\, for an all-ages once-a-century celebration! \nA multitude of spaces in YPT’s historic building at 165 Front Street East will come alive with music and memorabilia from each of its five decades as you roam through transformed lobbies\, classrooms and performance spaces. \nDoors open at 6pm and the fun will begin when guests are welcomed on the Mainstage at 7pm by YPT Artistic Director Allen MacInnis and Executive Director Nancy J. Webster. Surprise featured artists will join YPT staff and friends to help celebrate this milestone. Activities for our younger guests will take place from 6pm to 9pm. DESCRIPTION:With Young People’s Theatre’s production of The Wizard of Oz as the provocation\, participants will be guided through the process of creating their own action research project. Action research is a method of inquiry that provides students with the opportunity and skills to study issues affecting their lives and to plan and implement a course of action to address them. Participants in this full-day session will work in collaboration with professional artists and members of staff to design a research plan. This will include finding a research question\, collecting data and evidence\, answering their chosen question\, presenting their research and evaluating their project.

DESCRIPTION:TDSB Playwriting Festival\nWith a focus on playwriting\, students will discover and share their own voice and will practically apply what they learn by creating short plays of their own. These plays will then be shared with their peers\, teachers\, families and artists in a culminating festival day. Through facilitated sessions\, small group instruction and collaborative exploration with peers\, students will learn and develop their own work. They will employ strategies from the writing process and will use ensemble-based dramatic exercises to develop their own short plays. This riveting mystery was commissioned by YPT\, workshopped at the Banff Centre Playwrights Colony\, and comes from the pen of award-winning expat Canadian\, Evan Placey. \nScarberia follows the stories of these four boys: one pair knows the drowned girl and must manage the fallout of her disappearance while the other pair searches for the cause of death of a stranger. As each teen tries to navigate out of his increasingly troubled situation\, he finds his city and its poor reputation  refuses to release its grip on his future prospects. Each must make a decision to change his world or be imprisoned by it.

DESCRIPTION:PA Day: Play in a Day\nYPT is running full-day workshops on PA Days in the TDSB/TCDSB. This full-day workshop on April 15 is for children in Grades 1-3. It will run from 9:00am to 3:30pm. SUMMARY:TDSB Playwriting Festival
DESCRIPTION:TDSB Playwriting Festival\nWith a focus on playwriting\, students will discover and share their own voice and will practically apply what they learn by creating short plays of their own. These plays will then be shared with their peers\, teachers\, families and artists in a culminating festival day. Through facilitated sessions\, small group instruction and collaborative exploration with peers\, students will learn and develop their own work. They will employ strategies from the writing process and will use ensemble-based dramatic exercises to develop their own short plays. Students will also reflect on and discuss their learning experiences through online journaling throughout the process. \nIntroductory Seminar- March 22  \nWorking Sessions – March 24\, 29\, April 1\, 5\, 14\, 29\, May 3 \nPlaywriting Festival at YPT – May 9\nThe final day of YPT’s Playwriting Festival with Grades 6 and 8 in the TDSB takes place at YPT on May 9! Students will be able to see their final projects come to life as professional actors read their scripts.

DESCRIPTION:Member School Inquiry Project\nDiscovery Day: Tour/Rehearsal Observation – March 24 \nLearning Session – March 31 \nLearning Day: Workshops/Job Shadows – April 13 \nFor: Member School\, Grades 5&6 \nThis day will introduce students to the world of the theatre beyond performance and the actors they see on stage. By observing a wide range of people\, workplaces and activities\, students will think about who does what and how all of the pieces and departments work together. \nComponents:\n\nTours of YPT\, including backstage and all of the production shops.\nRehearsal observation of The Wizard of Oz.\n\nThis Discovery Day will take place at YPT. Students will be broken into smaller groups for the tours/rehearsal observations to maximize engagement. \nMember Schools\nYPT’s Member Schools program aims to create a deeper relationship between participating schools and the theatre. YPT works with school leadership to create a three-year partnership agreement specifically tailored to the aims and needs of that particular school. Each partnership is different but all include increased attendance at the theatre\, enrichment for students and teachers\, as well as research with and by the participating school’s students and staff. We provide Member Schools with a special rate for tickets and enrichment programming\, thus allowing them to take full advantage of the many opportunities we offer.
