SUMMARY:Cultural Gym: Secrets of Scenic Painting
DESCRIPTION:During Cultural Gym: Secrets of Scenic Painting\, YPT Resident Scenic Painter Mattea Kennedy will lead a series of classes on traditional techniques frequently used in scenic painting. Participants will learn the step-by-step process of how to beautifully transform any object into wood\, marble or stone\, using only paint and the secrets of scenic art! \nWed. April 26: 6PM-7:30PM\nWed. May 3: 6PM-7:30PM\nWed. May 10: 6PM-7:30PM\nWed. May 17: 6PM-7:30PM \nYPT’s Cultural Gym is a series of drop-in programs with each session having a clear and specific focus on an aspect of theatre performance and/or creation. Like a gym\, participants will have the opportunity to take a number of classes to learn or develop a drama based skill\, challenge themselves in new creative ways and be a part of a community that shares an interest in learning and creative expression. \nEach session will focus on a specific aspect of theatre performance and/or creation. The structure of this program is inspired by the idea of a physical gym where individuals (children and adults) can come to exercise their creative muscles. \nThis intergenerational program is open to children\, youth and adults. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a participating adult. We also welcome groups from community organizations. \nCultural Gym sessions are PWYC (Pay What You Can) with a recommended donation of $2 per session.  Space is limited. Pre-registration is recommended. Groups must register in advance. DESCRIPTION:Boys With Cars – A Forum\nJoin us Wednesday\, March 8\, 2017\n6PM to 8PM\nYoung People’s Theatre (165 Front Street East) \nON THE MAINSTAGE MAR 23-APR 1\, 2017\nRECOMMENDED FOR GRADES 8 TO 12 | AGES 13 & UP\n\nBoys With Cars explores issues around unchecked male privilege\, female empowerment and what constitutes consent – important subject matter to consider in these turbulent times. Contrasting the experiences of a South Asian-Canadian high school girl trying desperately to fit in with the life of the popular girl who seems to have everything\, the show offers a compelling fusion of dynamic theatre and classical Indian dance. Boys With Cars is adapted for young audiences from Anita Majumdar’s acclaimed solo plays\, The Fish Eyes Trilogy. \nThe forum is intended for adult stakeholders in both the education and artistic communities – parents\, educators\, college and university students\, administrators\, artists and arts workers – interested in taking part in this discussion. \nThe platform for dialogue at the forum will be set by youth engaged in Education & Participation programs at YPT. Their questions and responses to the play will be the launchpad for discussion with Boys With Cars writer\, choreographer and performer Anita Majumdar and subject experts\, including Dr. Lance McCready (Associate Professor\, Leadership\, Higher & Adult Education\, OISE/UT)\, Kim Snider (Gender Studies Teacher at Rosedale Heights School of the Arts) and representatives from Planned Parenthood Toronto. Together they will explore pertinent themes in the show from the critical perspectives of young people. \n6PM – 6:30PM Reception\n6:30PM – 7:15PM Facilitated Discussion\n7:15PM – 8PM Panel Discussion \nLight refreshments will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Artist Educators Training\nThursday\, February 2 & Friday\, February 3\, 2017\nYoung People’s Theatre\n9am-4pm \nProgram Details: \nThe YPT Artist Educators Training is open to all artists interested in arts education and with a desire to further develop their pedagogical skills through practical training. \nThe first day is comprised of several modules\, each with a particular focus. These include: \n•      lesson planning\,\n•      fostering authentic engagement\,\n•      developing techniques for classroom management\,\n•      connecting learning to a specific text or arts experience\, and\n•      creating ensemble-based exercises. \nThe second day begins with refining the participants’ plans and culminates in putting what they have created into action by facilitating workshops for children and young people. Throughout\, participants will work alongside one another and in concert with the invited youth to reflect on what makes an engaging workshop. \nBoth novice and experienced Artist Educators are welcome. This is her fourth year as a Resident Artist Educator at Young People’s Theatre. Most recently\, she worked for 15 months as the Interim Director of YPT’s Drama School. Other roles at YPT have included assistant director of Jack and the Giant Beanstalk\, director of the Junior Ensemble\, Drama School and summer camp instructor and facilitator for both student and teacher workshops. Marjie is an active member of the Ontario College of Teachers. She works with educators to integrate drama into other subjects in the Ontario curriculum and to support social literacy in schools. She is an occasional teacher and facilitates a variety of after school drama and writing programs. Her passion is exploring ideas\, questions and social issues through drama and devising theatre with children.  She continues to perform and direct professional work for both adult and young audiences. \n

DESCRIPTION:Young People’s Theatre is partnering with The Canadian Network for Arts & Learning (CNAL) to offer this year’s Toronto Hub with professional development artist-led workshops and an introduction to our arts and learning map of Ontario. \nAline Morales\nCome and take part in a professional development session to learn exercises that can be applied to teaching arts-based activities in a variety of settings. Reconnect with peers and meet new people in a time of networking\, followed by a presentation and discussion of CNAL’s mapping project. Help guide the evolution of this exciting three-year project to map arts and learning across Ontario. \nThe Hub will start off with JUNO award-nominated singer-songwriter and percussionist Aline Morales leading participants in Brazilian call-and-response warm-ups and exercises. \nRob Kempson\nThen YPT’s resident artist educator Rob Kempson will facilitate a workshop/discussion on collective creation – where participants will use ensemble-based exercises focusing on the creation and development of new characters and original stories. \nCome take part in an interactive session\, network with new and familiar peers\, and help steer development of our collective map. She is an actor\, movement specialist and writer. As an actor Melinda has worked with many companies across Canada including Theatre Passe Muraille\, Tarragon Theatre\, Theatre Direct and Carousel Players among many others. Melinda is a Laban Movement Specialist and has taught movement and created theatre with students across the GTA through Te-Amim\, a tolerance education organization\, as well as at the Stratford Festival’s Birmingham Conservatory\, the University of Waterloo\, Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts\, Sheridan College and Second City. She holds a Masters in Movement Studies from the Central School of Speech and Drama and has also written two plays\, Shiksas Sit Shiva (with Catherine Hayos) which won Patron’s Pick\, Best Production and Ensemble at the Toronto Fringe\, and The Peace Line. She was a member of the Tarragon Theatre’s Playwright’s Unit and an inaugural member of Buddies in Bad Times Ante Chamber writing series. She is currently creating a new physical theatre piece entitled Flow. \nThis is a program of The Ada Slaight Education Centre at YPT\, established through a generous donation from The Slaight Family Foundation.

Relaxed performances may include adjusted sound and lighting levels\, a designated relief area outside of the Mainstage theatre\, and additional support before and during your visit. \nWhen we held our first relaxed performance in the 2014/15 season\, we learned a great deal about how small changes and additions to the resources and environment provided can have a big impact. YPT’s relaxed performances are geared toward young people with ASD\, but are also suitable for all young audiences and can be an especially good introductory experience for first-time theatregoers. \n\n“I would like to thank YPT for taking on this initiative. At the relaxed performance I attended\, it was very exciting to see the kids and staff engage in such a safe and supportive environment. The thought and time put into the accommodations for those in the audience with ASD was very impressive. DESCRIPTION:Meet the Theatre – Family Day\nThis Family Day\, YPT is holding a special event for new audience members – and for those who have not visited us in a while: Come Meet the Theatre. \nWe know that for many audience members\, and especially first-time theatre-goers\, the opportunity to visit YPT in advance can help make their first show a more comfortable and engaging experience. This welcome event is an introduction to YPT. It will include a behind-the-scenes tour and the opportunity to visit the Mainstage to explore specific technical elements – sound\, lights\, costumes\, set pieces and props – with staff from our Education & Participation Department. \nMeet the Theatre also provides a helpful introduction for those who are attending our upcoming Relaxed Performances of Goodnight Moon. SUMMARY:Relaxed Performance of Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang
DESCRIPTION:These performances are specifically designed for young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Relaxed performances may include adjusted sound and lighting levels\, a designated relief area outside of the Mainstage theatre\, and additional support before and during your visit. When we held our first relaxed performance in the 2014/15 season\, we learned a great deal about how small changes and additions to the resources and environment provided can have a big impact. YPT’s relaxed performances are geared toward young people with ASD\, but are also suitable for all young audiences and can be an especially good introductory experience for first-time theatregoers. \n\n“I would like to thank YPT for taking on this initiative. At the relaxed performance I attended\, it was very exciting to see the kids and staff engage in such a safe and supportive environment. The thought and time put into the accommodations for those in the audience with ASD was very impressive. Parents and teachers bringing children with ASD to these performances should feel very confident that their experience will be very positive.
