DESCRIPTION:The Code – Relaxed Performance\nRelaxed Performances are well-suited to all young audiences and have been established to welcome people who will benefit from a more relaxed performance environment\, including people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). They can also be a good introductory experience for first-time theatregoers. The performance itself is unchanged\, but there is a more relaxed attitude to noise and movement. The house lights in the theatre are also adjusted\, so that it is not quite as dark as usual. There are also additional supports before and during the show including a designated relief area that can be used throughout your visit to take a break or watch the performance on video. \nAs part of this initiative\, YPT has created a video as well as a Visual Guide that provide a detailed description of what it’s like to visit the theatre. Contact Aimee Bouchard\, Community Programs Manager at abouchard@youngpeoplestheatre.org to be added to the waitlist. \nDetails: \nThe YPT Artist Educators Training is open to all artists interested in arts education and with a desire to further develop their pedagogical skills through practical training. The first day is comprised of several modules\, each with a particular focus. These include: \n\n     lesson planning\,\n     fostering authentic engagement\,\n     developing techniques for classroom management\,\n     connecting learning to a specific text or arts experience\, and\n     creating ensemble-based exercises.\n\nThe second day begins with refining the participants’ plans and culminates in putting what they have created into action by facilitating workshops for children and young people. Throughout\, participants will work alongside one another and in concert with the invited youth to reflect on what makes an engaging workshop. \nBoth novice and experienced Artist Educators are welcome. This program will provide professional development for those working in school and community settings across arts disciplines\, but with a focus on theatre. DESCRIPTION:In the Moment: An Intergenerational Training Opportunity for Emerging & Experienced Actors\nYoung People’s Theatre is thrilled to announce In the Moment\, a free-of-charge\, intergenerational training opportunity for both emerging and experienced artists from across Canada. The second training intensive offered by YPT\, this project consists of a nine-day summer program (August 26-September 4\, 2017) co-taught by Jan Henderson\, one of Canada’s leading clown and mask teachers\, and actor\, director\, and educator\, Aaron Willis. \nThe training will focus on the imperative presence of theatre. Applying tenets of spontaneous\, improvisational theatre and clown\, the work of ‘being live’ or ‘in the moment’ on stage will be explored through Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. \nThrough In the Moment\, we aim to meet the needs of both artists in training and those who have been working in theatre for many years\, but who share an interest in ongoing learning. Intergenerational programming has proven benefits and\, for the purposes of this training\, affords its participants the opportunity to learn from one another’s unique strengths and experiences in both training and professional work. \nSpace is limited. We will accept an equal number of training and professional artists. \nApplicants must either be: \n\nIn professional actor training at one of Canada’s theatre schools;\nParticipating in an actor training program offered through an arts organization;\nOR working as a professional actor and have an interest in ongoing training.\n\nApplicants must be available for all training dates.\n(Sessions will run from 9:30AM-5:30PM each day.)  \nApplicants should submit: \n\nA video of themselves performing two monologues. One must be from an absurdist play. The other is the actor’s choice. The video must not exceed four minutes. The video can be a DVD submission or a YouTube link.\nA brief letter (no more than 500 words) expressing their particular interest in this training opportunity.\nTwo reference letters from current instructors (if in training) or directors (if working).\n\nThis training program is free thanks to generous support from the Slaight Family Foundation. Some funding may also be available to offset some travel/accommodation costs. Like a gym\, participants will have the opportunity to take a number of classes to learn or develop a drama based skill\, challenge themselves in new creative ways and be a part of a community that shares an interest in learning and creative expression. \nEach session will focus on a specific aspect of theatre performance and/or creation. The structure of this program is inspired by the idea of a physical gym where individuals (children and adults) can come to exercise their creative muscles. \nThis intergenerational program is open to children\, youth and adults. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a participating adult. We also welcome groups from community organizations. \nCultural Gym sessions are PWYC (Pay What You Can) with a recommended donation of $2 per session.  Space is limited. Contrasting the experiences of a South Asian-Canadian high school girl trying desperately to fit in with the life of the popular girl who seems to have everything\, the show offers a compelling fusion of dynamic theatre and classical Indian dance. Boys With Cars is adapted for young audiences from Anita Majumdar’s acclaimed solo plays\, The Fish Eyes Trilogy. \nThe forum is intended for adult stakeholders in both the education and artistic communities – parents\, educators\, college and university students\, administrators\, artists and arts workers – interested in taking part in this discussion. \nThe platform for dialogue at the forum will be set by youth engaged in Education & Participation programs at YPT. Their questions and responses to the play will be the launchpad for discussion with Boys With Cars writer\, choreographer and performer Anita Majumdar and subject experts\, including Dr. Lance McCready (Associate Professor\, Leadership\, Higher & Adult Education\, OISE/UT)\, Kim Snider (Gender Studies Teacher at Rosedale Heights School of the Arts) and representatives from Planned Parenthood Toronto. DESCRIPTION:Artist Educators Training\nThursday\, February 2 & Friday\, February 3\, 2017\nYoung People’s Theatre\n9am-4pm \nProgram Details: \nThe YPT Artist Educators Training is open to all artists interested in arts education and with a desire to further develop their pedagogical skills through practical training. \nThe first day is comprised of several modules\, each with a particular focus. These include: \n•      lesson planning\,\n•      fostering authentic engagement\,\n•      developing techniques for classroom management\,\n•      connecting learning to a specific text or arts experience\, and\n•      creating ensemble-based exercises. \nThe second day begins with refining the participants’ plans and culminates in putting what they have created into action by facilitating workshops for children and young people. Throughout\, participants will work alongside one another and in concert with the invited youth to reflect on what makes an engaging workshop. \nBoth novice and experienced Artist Educators are welcome. This is her fourth year as a Resident Artist Educator at Young People’s Theatre. Most recently\, she worked for 15 months as the Interim Director of YPT’s Drama School. Other roles at YPT have included assistant director of Jack and the Giant Beanstalk\, director of the Junior Ensemble\, Drama School and summer camp instructor and facilitator for both student and teacher workshops. Marjie is an active member of the Ontario College of Teachers. She works with educators to integrate drama into other subjects in the Ontario curriculum and to support social literacy in schools. She is an occasional teacher and facilitates a variety of after school drama and writing programs. Her passion is exploring ideas\, questions and social issues through drama and devising theatre with children.  She continues to perform and direct professional work for both adult and young audiences. \n

Reconnect with peers and meet new people in a time of networking\, followed by a presentation and discussion of CNAL’s mapping project. Help guide the evolution of this exciting three-year project to map arts and learning across Ontario. \nThe Hub will start off with JUNO award-nominated singer-songwriter and percussionist Aline Morales leading participants in Brazilian call-and-response warm-ups and exercises. \nRob Kempson\nThen YPT’s resident artist educator Rob Kempson will facilitate a workshop/discussion on collective creation – where participants will use ensemble-based exercises focusing on the creation and development of new characters and original stories. \nCome take part in an interactive session\, network with new and familiar peers\, and help steer development of our collective map. DESCRIPTION:Young People’s Theatre is delighted to extend an invitation to the community to attend our 50th Birthday Bash on Friday\, May 13th! \nJoin the party as YPT throws open its doors to welcome members of the theatre and the education communities\, along with donors\, volunteers\, Drama School alumni\, audience members past and present\, and friends from the St. Lawrence neighbourhood\, for an all-ages once-a-century celebration! \nA multitude of spaces in YPT’s historic building at 165 Front Street East will come alive with music and memorabilia from each of its five decades as you roam through transformed lobbies\, classrooms and performance spaces. \nDoors open at 6pm and the fun will begin when guests are welcomed on the Mainstage at 7pm by YPT Artistic Director Allen MacInnis and Executive Director Nancy J. Webster. Surprise featured artists will join YPT staff and friends to help celebrate this milestone. Activities for our younger guests will take place from 6pm to 9pm. Post-show\, the good times will continue around the building and well into the evening. She is an actor\, movement specialist and writer. As an actor Melinda has worked with many companies across Canada including Theatre Passe Muraille\, Tarragon Theatre\, Theatre Direct and Carousel Players among many others. Melinda is a Laban Movement Specialist and has taught movement and created theatre with students across the GTA through Te-Amim\, a tolerance education organization\, as well as at the Stratford Festival’s Birmingham Conservatory\, the University of Waterloo\, Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts\, Sheridan College and Second City. She holds a Masters in Movement Studies from the Central School of Speech and Drama and has also written two plays\, Shiksas Sit Shiva (with Catherine Hayos) which won Patron’s Pick\, Best Production and Ensemble at the Toronto Fringe\, and The Peace Line. She was a member of the Tarragon Theatre’s Playwright’s Unit and an inaugural member of Buddies in Bad Times Ante Chamber writing series. She is currently creating a new physical theatre piece entitled Flow. \nThis is a program of The Ada Slaight Education Centre at YPT\, established through a generous donation from The Slaight Family Foundation.
