DESCRIPTION:Meet the Theatre – Family Day\nThis Family Day\, YPT is holding a special event for new audience members – and for those who have not visited us in a while: Come Meet the Theatre. \nWe know that for many audience members\, and especially first-time theatre-goers\, the opportunity to visit YPT in advance can help make their first show a more comfortable and engaging experience. This welcome event is an introduction to YPT. It will include a behind-the-scenes tour and the opportunity to visit the Mainstage to explore specific technical elements – sound\, lights\, costumes\, set pieces and props – with staff from our Education & Participation Department. \nMeet the Theatre also provides a helpful introduction for those who are attending our upcoming Relaxed Performances of Goodnight Moon. Relaxed Performances are specifically designed for young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)\, but are suitable for all audiences. \nAlso on Family Day there is a 2:30pm performance of Mistatim as well as 9:30am & 2:30pm performances of YPT’s baby show – One Thing Leads to Another. \nMeet the Theatre Details:\nMonday\, February 15th – Family Day\nYoung People’s Theatre\n165 Front Street East \nAdmission is FREE\, but space is limited. DESCRIPTION:Building Story Through Improv\nOur next session of Cultural Gym: Building Story Through Improv takes place Wednesday\, February 10th. YPT’s Cultural Gym sessions offer an opportunity for both children and adults to exercise their creative muscles. Sessions introduce specific aspects of theatre and performance to help participants develop new drama-based skills. Five different sessions are offered throughout our 2015/16 season\, each with a unique focus and led by professional artists. Come challenge yourself in new ways and be part of an artistic community! \nSession #3: Building Story Through Improv with Herbie Barnes\nLearn the basic techniques of improvisation with YPT Resident Artist Educator\, Herbie Barnes. Sessions include ensemble-based exercises focussing on the creation and development of new characters and original stories. \nUpcoming Dates:\nWed\, Feb 17th – 6:00pm to 7:30pm\nWed\, Feb 24th – 6:00pm to 7:30pm\nWed\, March 2nd – 6:00pm to 7:30pm \nAbout Herbie Barnes:\nHerbie Barnes is an Anishnawbe theatre artist from Aundeck Omni Kaning on Manitoulin Island. Some of Herbie’s stage roles include Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit (YPT\, Manitoba Theatre for Young People\, Carousel Players)\, Norval Morrisseau in Copper Thunderbird (NAC)\, a Wickersham Brother in Seussical (MTYP)\, and Russell in Russell’s World (MTYP)\, which he also wrote. Herbie works in front of and behind the camera for film and television as an actor\, director and writer. As an artist-educator\, Herbie has facilitated programs for elementary- to university-aged students including a technique he developed called “Dropping the Mask”. \nParticipants:\nWe welcome children\, youth and adults to attend the program. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a participating adult. \nRegistration:\nCultural Gym sessions are PWYC (Pay What You Can) with a recommended donation of $2 per session. SUMMARY:Relaxed Performance of Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang
DESCRIPTION:These performances are specifically designed for young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Relaxed performances may include adjusted sound and lighting levels\, a designated relief area outside of the Mainstage theatre\, and additional support before and during your visit. When we held our first relaxed performance in the 2014/15 season\, we learned a great deal about how small changes and additions to the resources and environment provided can have a big impact. YPT’s relaxed performances are geared toward young people with ASD\, but are also suitable for all young audiences and can be an especially good introductory experience for first-time theatregoers. \n\n“I would like to thank YPT for taking on this initiative. At the relaxed performance I attended\, it was very exciting to see the kids and staff engage in such a safe and supportive environment. The thought and time put into the accommodations for those in the audience with ASD was very impressive. Parents and teachers bringing children with ASD to these performances should feel very confident that their experience will be very positive. Each week\, the theme will change and so will the creation. \nParticipants:\nWe welcome children\, youth and adults to attend the program! Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a participating adult. \nAbout Rob Kempson:\nRob Kempson is a theatre artist and educator\, working as a playwright\, composer\, performer\, and director. Rob was most recently seen starring in his Dora-nominated musical The Way Back To Thursday (Theatre Passe Muraille). As an artist-educator\, Rob has worked for a number of major school boards as well as Young People’s Theatre\, Canadian Stage\, Theatre Passe Muraille\, Pleiades Theatre\, Opera Atelier and Casa Loma. He works regularly as a community arts facilitator and curator\, collectively creating performances and interactive exhibits with community members. He is currently the Associate Artistic Director at the Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque\, ON.\n\nRegistration:\nCultural Gym sessions are PWYC (Pay What You Can) with a recommended donation of $2 per session. \nSpace is limited.
