On the day of your performance\, you’ll tune into a livestream\, pop on a blindfold (included)\, and begin your tactile trek along with an online audience of young people from across the GTA. The series will be made available to schools with options pre- and post-show workshops. \nSign up for our e-letter today and get all the latest news on the Storyteller Series and more\, plus full access to YPT’s 20.21 season! \nLouise Profeit-LeBlanc\n“T’s Däna”- Beaver Woman \nLouise is a member of the Nacho N’yak Dun First Nation of Mayo\, in Northeastern Yukon. She is a mother\, grandmother and a Story-Keeper. She presently lives in Wakefield\, Quebec with her husband Bob. Louise comes from a long line of traditional storytellers and her repertoire consists of her own personal stories and more specifically ancient stories relative to her homeland\, the Yukon. These stories depict how the land was made\, how her people lived and survived for thousands of years. Many of these stories refer to how everything in nature\, exists in balance but more importantly depict morals and teachings how we all can learn to live harmoniously with each other\, while caring for the land\, the water and all living things. She is grateful of the privilege of having been passed down these stories by her Elders and honoured to be able to share them with all generations and people of all backgrounds\, for the last 45 years. \nShe has travelled extensively sharing these stories at many International venues Storytelling festivals\, universities and colleges\, where she also has provided storytelling  workshops using examples of stories to inform the audience  of the importance of oral tradition for the healing of the nations. \nLouise is also a visual textile artist\, poet and short story writer and continues to demonstrate the necessity of utilizing the power of art and story\, to heal\, educate and provide opportunities for others to express their culture and strength through the arts. Louise volunteers her time serving in many capacities and sharing Traditional knowledge with children\, mothers at schools and  community centres. She also provides storytelling workshops and is a member of  the Storytellers of Canada-Conteurs du Canada. \nShe recently accepted to be on the  board for the “Bearing Witness Canada” chapter for this region\, established to assist in educating the public about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report and has recently offered a workshop on “Seven Valleys Towards Reconciliation”  for the organization to help commemorate National Indigenous Day. Louise strongly believes that “the purpose of justice is for the appearance of unity” on the planet.

DESCRIPTION:YPT is running full-day workshops on PA Days in the TDSB/TCDSB for children in Grades 1-3 and 4-6. Each full-day workshop will run from 9AM to 3:30PM with early drop-off available from 8:30AM. These sessions are being offered at the specially-discounted price of $75 to $91 per participant. \nParticipants will experience fun drama exercises led by great artist educators\, culminating in a collaboratively-created “play in a day”. Young People’s Theatre will perform a reading of Elder Redbird’s play\, Eagle Drum Girl\, and will feature Elder Redbird himself! \nThe premise of this inter-generational play is as follows: \n\n“Dan Eagle’s son and daughter-in-law want him to move into seniors’ residence instead of trying to fix the dilapidated shack he calls home. But Old Dan and his granddaughter\, Cheyenne have other ideas…” \n\nThis event will also include a talk by Elder Redbird\, as well as dance and drum performances. \nWHEN \nMonday\, August 5th\, 2019 \n1PM – 2:30PM \nWHERE \nTrillium Park Pavilion \n\nABOUT WIGWAM CHI-CHEMUNG \nWigwam Chi-Chemung is an art installation and Indigenous interpretive learning centre presented by Myseum in partnership with Duke Redbird. DESCRIPTION:Tell Me That Story Again – FREE TRIAL CLASS\nThe Indigenous Tradition of Oral Storytelling\nGrade 5-8 \nJuly 17\, 2019 | 5PM – 6PM \nPlease email Emily Langer\, Drama School Coordinator\, at elanger@youngpeoplestheatre.ca to attend our FREE TRIAL CLASS on July 17. \nClass Description: \nArtist Educators Lindy Kinoshameg\, from Wikwemikoong Unceded First Nation\, and Leslie McCue\, from Curve Lake First Nation\, will facilitate a new storytelling class that encompasses respect\, leadership and teamwork. Indigenous storytelling is deeply rooted in our connection with Mother Earth\, the water\, the plants and animals. Students will be invited to explore that connection through the telling of their own stories. In the Fall and Winter terms\, students will be introduced to the Indigenous tradition of oral storytelling\, including its history\, and learn how art\, movement and dance help weave the tales told. Students will develop confidence\, active listening skills\, and their imagination. SUMMARY:Mary Poppins - Relaxed Performance
DESCRIPTION:Mary Poppins – Relaxed Performance\nRelaxed Performances are well-suited to all young audiences and have been established to welcome people who will benefit from a more relaxed performance environment\, including people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). They can also be a good introductory experience for first-time theatregoers. The performance itself is unchanged\, but there is a more relaxed attitude to noise and movement. The house lights in the theatre are also adjusted\, so that it is not quite as dark as usual. There are also additional supports before and during the show including a designated relief area that can be used throughout your visit to take a break or watch the performance on video. \nAs part of this initiative\, YPT has created a video as well as a Visual Guide that provide a detailed description of what it’s like to visit the theatre. On Saturday\, November 17\, we will be offering a free trial class so that students and caregivers alike can check out what all the excitement is about. The YPT Drama School is pleased to welcome Lindy Kinoshameg from Wikwemikong Unceded First Nation and Leslie McCue from Curve Lake First Nation to facilitate a series of Indigenous storytelling workshops that encompass respect\, leadership and teamwork. Indigenous storytelling is deeply rooted in our connection with Mother Earth\, the water\, the plants\, and animals. Participants will be invited to explore these themes through the telling of their own stories. \nIndigenous educators Lindy and Leslie will highlight the importance of both sharing oral stories as well as showing respect and giving space to the speaker. Participants will be challenged to be active listeners as well as imaginative creators\, developing their confidence\, leadership and collaborative skills. \nThis workshop is recommended for students in in Grades 5-8. Always striving to practice new art-forms\, this has led to a multitude of experiences: Visual arts projects\, Healthy Living Program Coordinator\, and Indigenous Radio Program Host\, working his way up to Production Tour Manager and Event Coordinator\, Indigenous Dance and cultural workshop facilitation. Lindy is now involved with Young People’s Theatre as Community Engagement Facilitator\, in part due to his strong belief and push towards incorporating Indigenous values and teachings into his practice\, and sharing his knowledge with others. \nLeslie McCue  \nLeslie is a proud member of Mississaugas of Curve Lake First Nation. An arts administrator\, artist\, performer and educator who over the years has fought for Indigenous rights by breaking stereotypes and raising cultural awareness\, her work is driven by her past\, her passion to educate and the motivation to empower others. Leslie is currently the General Manager for Paprika Festival\, the Administrator for Chocolate Woman Collective\, and the Coordinator for the Royal Ontario Museum Youth Cabinet. Leslie is excited to be a Resident Artist Educator for YPT this season. Leslie currently sits on the Indigenous Advisory Circle at the Royal Ontario Museum and freelances for various organizations in arts administration\, facilitation\, project coordination and curation. May 17: 6PM-7:30PM \nYPT’s Cultural Gym is a series of drop-in programs with each session having a clear and specific focus on an aspect of theatre performance and/or creation. Like a gym\, participants will have the opportunity to take a number of classes to learn or develop a drama based skill\, challenge themselves in new creative ways and be a part of a community that shares an interest in learning and creative expression. \nEach session will focus on a specific aspect of theatre performance and/or creation. The structure of this program is inspired by the idea of a physical gym where individuals (children and adults) can come to exercise their creative muscles. \nThis intergenerational program is open to children\, youth and adults. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a participating adult. We also welcome groups from community organizations. \nCultural Gym sessions are PWYC (Pay What You Can) with a recommended donation of $2 per session.  Space is limited. This is her fourth year as a Resident Artist Educator at Young People’s Theatre. Most recently\, she worked for 15 months as the Interim Director of YPT’s Drama School. Other roles at YPT have included assistant director of Jack and the Giant Beanstalk\, director of the Junior Ensemble\, Drama School and summer camp instructor and facilitator for both student and teacher workshops. Marjie is an active member of the Ontario College of Teachers. She works with educators to integrate drama into other subjects in the Ontario curriculum and to support social literacy in schools. She is an occasional teacher and facilitates a variety of after school drama and writing programs. Her passion is exploring ideas\, questions and social issues through drama and devising theatre with children.  She continues to perform and direct professional work for both adult and young audiences. \n
